A Brief History of

 

Before there were Puncs there were Grunts. After the Grunts had been turned into Written Words thousands of years ago, the Puncs arrived to put the Words in order—but they didn’t all appear at the same time.

 

First came the Early Puncs: the Moabite (Phoenician) Full Stops and (many years later) the Roman colons.

 

Then came the Middle Puncs—such as the Anglo-Saxon Commas...

 

...followed by the Later Puncs—such as the Medieval Brackets and the Elizabethan Apostrophes.

 

After a period of peace came invasions of Speech Marks...

 

...and last of all, marching three-by-three, appeared the endless Ellipses...
