Alec Apostrophe is the skipper of a fishin’ boat called the Jolly Punc. He’s always in a hurry and speaks extremely quickly, shortenin’ words (don’t, can’t, won’t) and droppin ’is h’s and g’s.
At school, Alec’s teacher noticed he had a squint. His mother wasn’t surprised, as he often seemed to look at her sideways. “Let’s go to the optician’s,” she said.
“He’ll have to wear a patch over his good eye,” said Mr Gaze, Alec’s optician. “It’ll make his lazy eye work properly.”
When he’s not at sea, Alec lives with his cat, Appie, and his parrot, Nipper, in a cottage only a stone’s throw from the harbour. “I’ll never get married,” he growls. “Who’d put up with ’an ’usband who’s always wanderin’ around the world smellin’ of fish?”
